What does it mean to have the character trait of Perseverance?

Perseverance is the ability to keep moving forward, to keep doing something even in the face of obstacles and adversity. Obstacles can be something physical or something mental or even verbal. We may face opposition from others about what we have set out to achieve, we may face our own fear of failure and other times we may just face difficulties in sitting still, doing something repetitive or slow moving. There are many instances where we must call upon our ability to persevere in order to get through or past something.

Sometimes we can get disheartened, perseverance can also be about continuing a course of action in spite of the lack of success.

Perseverance though in many cases is about trying to do something and achieve something, it can also be about avoiding or moving away from things too, this also requires self-control, persistence and determination to be successful but perseverance is something that will greatly benefit those trying to move away or toward something. As christian we are to move away from sin and toward righteousness or the life Jesus showed us as 'the way' to live.

James 1:12

'Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.'

What It Means

In this verse James tells us that trusting God through our trials grows our faith toward a Christ-like maturity of trusting God more, and more deeply, and with greater endurance. That choice to keep trusting God in the midst of the trial brings His blessing. Our circumstances may be hard, but we have His approval. God is on the side of those who trust Him through life's most difficult moments.

This verse tells us that for our perseverance during the hard times we shall rewarded with 'the crown of life', many scholars have mixed views on what this crown is and what it means for us as Christians in this life and in the next but the most popular thought is that we will be rewarded by God in heaven for our perseverance and endurance of faith, there is similar language used in other verses like in the book of Revelation when John quotes Jesus making this very promise to those who are "faithful unto death" (Revelation 2:10). Paul and Peter also write about crowns to be given to faithful Christians (1 Corinthians 9:24–27; 1 Peter 5:4; 2 Timothy 4:8).

Let's look at a story in the Bible

Daniel and the Lions' Den

Found in Daniel 6.

The story teaches us that we can choose to do the right thing even in the face of persecution. Daniel knew that prayer could result in him being thrown to the hungry lions and possible death, but he prayed anyway. He persevered through fear and continued to pray, knowing it was the right thing to do for his God.

The story also shows us how our perseverance and trust in the LORD can impact others and their faith. Imagine if Daniel hadn't continued to pray, his loyalty and faith wouldn't have been as strong and so he may not have been so favorable to the king and the king may never have come to see the mighty strength of God. God wants us to glorify him through our faith, we can do this by persevering, even, in the face of persecution.
