Building a Dog Kennel

If you have a pet, then you are responsible for sheltering them from the elements. The weather can get crazy sometimes and an umbrella isn't going to work well for our four legged friends. So lets make them a little home.

There are many ways to make a dog kennel. You can use a variety of materials depending on the size of your dog. For a small dog you could craft something out of cardboard, of course that does mean it would need to be an indoor kennel and, would most likely, not last too long.

Paper mache could lengthen the lifespan of the kennel when building out of cardboard. Take a look at the video below which details how to make your own paper mache paste. This paste can then be brushed onto newspaper, you can also dip the newspaper in the paste depending on how thick it is. This is a very messy craft to ask an adult to help you. You will need two to three layers of paper mache over the entire dog house to make it strong, be sure to let it fully dry over night or longer in between coats and before painting.

If you want to build something long lasting, something that could go outside, it is best to build out of wood or metal. Wood is a great sustainable material and can be fairly easy to work with. You will definitely need an adult to help or supervise you. Be sure to ask for help and ask to use needed tools, as some tools can be quite dangerous. Check out the video in the inspiration section below for a template and steps to build a kennel of your own out of wood.

Before you set out on making a kennel you need to design one.

Take a look at the video above for an idea on how to draw a dog kennel. You will need to consider the size of your pet when deciding on measurements, like how tall or wide the kennel will be.
